Electronics. Also landfill banned in California. Retailers including Best Buy and Staples take common electronics back free year round, and the county runs e-waste events.
Propane tanks and aerosols. Pressurized, so never in the bin. Exchange retailers take propane tanks.
Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs. Mercury content, household hazardous waste route.
Appliances with refrigerant. A garage fridge or freezer needs the refrigerant professionally recovered before the shell can be scrapped. Once that is done it goes in the bin like any metal appliance.
Set a single box or corner aside for all of this at the start of the sort. Discovering four cans of paint and three car batteries on loading day is how they end up in the bin by accident.
